We do save and store the extra food for future consumption, but not always. Am I right? It’s not your fault because most of the times it happens that we want to store that leftover food or the extra vegetables bought from the market, but we don’t know know how to store it.
You can save food on a daily basis, make it last longer and use it in future if you use the proper way to preserve it. By doing this, you can save a good amount of money which is spent on buying foodstuffs. Well, a common trick to store and preserve many of the edible items is to freeze them. The freezing tactics do vary according to the foodstuff. So let’s have a look at the freezer hacks for different foods and cut down on food wastage.
1. Save your expensive nuts
Nuts are pretty expensive, so letting them go waste is quite painful. So, if you think you are not going to use them now, you can keep them fresh by freezing them. You just need to wrap them in plastic wraps and put them in the freezer. Whenever you need them for baking, as an ingredient for a dish or to eat raw, just them out and they are ready for your use.
If you want to store the corn as a whole with ears, then cook them in boiling water for 2-3 minutes and then cool them instantly by giving them a cold water bath. Then you can freeze them by sealing them in plastic Ziploc in your freezer. You can even use this method for storing just corn kernels.
Another method for corn kernels is simply sealing them in Ziploc or in airtight containers and freezing them. You don’t need to boil or wash them. If you are washing them prior to storage then they won’t last. Whenever you need them, you just need to wash them and get rid of the ice and then use them however you want. Corn can last up to a year on storing them properly using the above method.
Use your silicon muffin bar by putting eggs in it and then freezing. Normally, eggs last up to 2-3 weeks in the refrigerator, but on freezing they easily last for 4-5 months and even up to a year.
Flour is something which we generally use the most. But if the need arises for you to store them because you are worried that they will get contaminated, then do not worry. Just fill an airtight container with it and put it in the freezer. That flour will last as long as you need it the next time, which I think would be soon enough.
What if you have a dough of the flour, which you might be worried about throwing it away? If so, then you can get a sigh of relief as you don’t need to dump it off. You can store it for future use. Wrap it in a plastic wrap or in a Ziploc and freeze it. When you need it, just thaw and use it. You can always find in my freezer, some dough which is stored for future use.
