Dark blue hues like navy have really been popular lately, and I’m here for it! Navy adds so much depth to any room. It’s rich and elegant without being too heavy like black.
Honestly, my favorite part about using navy in a space is that it never looks outdated. You know how every once in a while you look at a decorated room and think “this was cool in 2010 but isn’t really anymore?” Navy never feels like that to me. It’s always looked timeless to me and continues to look modern. If you’ve been looking for a reason to refresh your home, painting it navy might be just the excuse you need. Below are some of my favorite ways to add navy into your home.
Paint an Accent Wall Navy Blue

Painting an accent wall is a simple way to take your room to the next level. Bringing in a dark color like navy really makes a bold statement and elevates your room from boring to sophisticated. When doing an accent wall make sure to only paint one wall a darker color. Whether it be behind your bed or couch, it makes the room feel less heavy.
One tip I have when painting an wall navy is to add in some gold or brass decor. Gold and navy together is like MAGIC. It instantly looks more high-end and sleek. Painting an accent wall is one of those updates that totally transforms your home without breaking the bank.
Add in Some Navy Blue Furniture

This is honestly my favorite way to add more navy to a room. Painting an entire room can seem like such a hassle, so incorporating dark furniture is a great way to add color without commitment. A great thing to start with is adding a navy sofa to your living room. Dark sofas are so popular right now and they really make a statement as the focal point of your living room. Another furniture piece I think looks so chic in navy is dining chairs. When paired with a wooden dining table, I love how the colors contrast each other.
If you’re nervous about getting dark furniture you could start with smaller pieces like an ottoman or armchair. You can also add matte finish navy cabinetry to more your more smaller furniture pieces. Additionally, incorporating matte-finish navy cabinetry in smaller furniture pieces can provide a modern touch while keeping the overall aesthetic sleek and understated.
Wall Color: Navy and Gold
While navy furniture is so beautiful on its own; throwing in gold accents really gives that luxurious feel. Gold framed mirrors look incredible against navy walls. Light fixtures and drawer pulls are other small ways you can add gold into a room. You don’t have to go overboard either! Hanging a few gold picture frames on your wall or laying out some gold candlesticks is really enough to make your navy room look high-end.
Navy Blue Decor Inspired by the Sea
When you think of the color navy you automatically think of anything nautical, and for good reason. They just go together. The color navy actually derives from old navy ships, so it makes sense you’d decorate your home with rope, striped patterns, and anchors.
Inspired by this color theory, I love adding in navy and gold décor that has a subtle nod to the nautical theme. Throwing pillows and artwork are my go-to’s for using this type of décor.
You could even add in some decorative rope and anchors but don’t go TOO crazy. Like if you have anchors hanging on your wall, maybe don’t use a striped nautical blanket. Sprinkle in one or two nautical themed décor pieces and your home will feel so pulled together.
Navy Blue Kitchen Cabinets and Islands

Dark blue cabinets are my favorite way to elevate any kitchen. Not only do they make a kitchen look extremely expensive, but they’re beautiful! I always recommend pairing navy cabinets with brass hardware and marble countertops. It’s such a classic combo that looks so much more expensive than it is.
If you’re scared to paint all your cabinets navy, start with your kitchen island! Painting your island blue and keeping your other cabinets white or neutral really lets the island stand out. Make sure you have a lot of natural lighting with this look because dark colors can make a room feel smaller.
Navy Blue Ideas for Your Bedroom

If you want to create a cozy and relaxing atmosphere then painting your bedroom walls navy is the way to go. Having dark blue walls completely surrounds you when you’re inside, creating this cocoon effect.
If you’re not ready to commit to navy walls then throw in some navy bedding with white or light walls. You get that pop of color without having to paint.
If you’re looking to slowly add navy into your home start with some navy blue throw pillows. Another easy way to add navy into your bedroom is with a navy bed headboard. Blanket bars are another way you can add navy into your room and create that beautiful upholstered look.
Or forego wall color altogether and add a navy area rug. Similar to a dark blue wall, rug will completely transform your bedroom and make it feel more cozy.
Use Navy Color in Your Bathroom

Dark blue bathrooms are so popular right now because they make your bathroom look like a spa. Similar to using navy walls in your bedroom, having them in your bathroom creates a really cozy atmosphere. Brass light fixtures and hardware look beautiful against navy blue, and I love how it looks modern but also timeless.
If you want to go all out you could paint your bathroom walls navy and have white trim. THAT is where the BUUUUUS comes in. Don’t be afraid to just add navy accents into your bathroom either. Throw in some navy towels and a bath mat. The contrast of white and navy is what really sells this bathroom.
Pair Dark Blue with All Natural Wood Tones
Dark wood tones and navy blue are honestly two of my favorite colors to work with. They’re so beautiful next to each other and really compliment each other. Dark wood tones like walnut and oak look so rich next to navy blue. If you want more contrast then go for lighter wood tones like maple and ash. I have used this color combo in so many rooms it’s unreal.
Sticking with the kitchen idea, I love using dark blue cabinets with wood countertops. Whether you go with granite, wood, or marble the contrast of blue and wood is always perfect.
Kitchen cabinets are not the only place you can use this color combo. I love using navy accent walls with mid-century wood furniture. Additionally, incorporating natural wood lowers or walnut cabinetry into your design can enhance the cozy focal points in your space.
Navy Blue Ceiling

Painting your ceiling navy is something I don’t think people would normally think to do. But hear me out- it’ll change your whole room.
Painting your ceiling navy blue creates the cozy factor. It also make you LOOK UP. Which is kind of fun.
Similar to the dark blue walls, if you paint your ceiling navy I suggest pairing it with white trim or some metallic accessories that can reflect light.
Use Blue for Your Home’s Exterior
Painting your front door navy is a great way to make your home’s exterior stand out. If you have a more traditional home like we do neutral colors can really make your house feel so timeless.
If you want to really embrace the navy trend try painting your shutters, mailbox, and porch swing/navy. It really pulls together the whole exterior and makes it feel so inviting.
Navy trim against white or gray colored homes look so modern too!
Pattern it Up With Blue

I love bringing patterns into a home because they add so much depth. Small spaces actually benefit from dark colors with patterns. A dark blue with white geometric pattern can make your room feel bigger rather than small and boxed in. If you’re going to go bold with a pattern then I suggest balancing it out with some white or neutral colored furniture.
One of my favorite ways to use navy patterns is with curtains. Not only will they frame your windows perfectly but it instantly makes your room look so put together.
And hey, did I mention they hide dirt way better than white curtains? Pro tip.
Add Some Small Dark Blue Details

Sometimes it’s the small things that can really make a difference in your home. Remember how I said painting your front door navy can really make your home pop? Another small detail that you can do is switch out your cabinet knobs to navy.
Small details like adding navy throw pillows, ceramic vases, frame, or candles can really accent your home. All of these objects can be placed in rooms that you want to spruce up but don’t want to go “OVER THE TOP.”
Creating a Navy Blue Home Office
Similar to using dark walls in your bedroom, painting your office navy will make you WANT to work. Not only does it look SO good, but it’s calming. I recommend adding in gold frames and some brass desk accessories to really make your office shine.
If you’re willing to invest in furniture, get yourself a navy leather chair. There’s something about dark furniture in your office that makes you look professional.
If you really want to commit then go ahead and do dark blue built-in shelves.
White or light wood furniture really helps balance out all that dark blue you’re using.
Bring Blue Outdoors

Not only can you use navy indoors, you can bring it outdoors! Adding dark blue into your outdoor living space can really make it feel so elegant. Dark blue pillows and throw pillows are an easy way to make your patio furniture look high-end.
You could even add some navy planters for your plants to live in. And if you’re feeling ambitious add a navy rug (that you can run inside when it rains). Lastly, throw in some navy and white striped pillows for shade when your relaxing outside
Balance out Dark with Neutral
Pairing neutral tones with navy is one of my favorite color schemes. It’s so versatile and you can use it in pretty much any room.
When you pair beige, gray, or creamy white walls with navy blue you get the perfect mix of cozy and chic. Neutral tones help tone down how bold of a color navy can be. At the same time navy helps add personality to your room that neutrals alone wouldn’t be able to accomplish.
Conclusion
Whether you’re diving into a bold accent wall or just dipping your toes in with small accessories, navy creates depth and character without overwhelming. Trust me, incorporating this timeless hue into your space isn’t just decorating—it’s creating a sanctuary that truly feels like home.
