Baking soda is amazing—it helps in making so many delicious dishes. But its usage is not limited to just cooking as there are tons of other uses of baking soda. From cleaning around your home to using it for skin and hair benefits, baking soda offers us so much at such a low price.
Baking soda can deal with many skin and hair problems when used for short periods. Just don’t use it in excess or else it can damage your hair and skin. Also, make sure to do a patch test to see if your skin is sensitive to baking soda.

1. Treat Acne and Pimples
Baking soda has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties which can help treat and reduce the symptoms of acne and other breakouts. It works well especially for people with oily skin. But, there is no harm in trying it as it helps balance skin’s pH which plays a major role in the occurrence of breakouts.
People with dry skin can use it with coconut oil. And it’s natural, so it’s better than OTC products with harsh chemicals.
2. Eases Sunburn
Baking soda help relieve the burning sensation on the sunburned skin due to its alkaline nature which helps in soothing skin. So, keep a box of baking soda handy during summer.
You can even use it on sunburn blisters as it has a drying property that can help sun blisters dry out quickly.
3. Enhance Skin Complexion
No one likes uneven or dull skin complexion. But don’t want to use harsh chemicals, try baking soda. Baking soda is a good exfoliating agent and helps in getting rid of dead skin cells which helps in enhancing skin complexion. It also maintains the optimal pH level of the skin which is essential to maintain clear and healthy skin.
Just mix 2 tbsp baking soda and 1 tbsp lemon juice with 1/2 tsp coconut oil and 4-5 drops of tea tree oil. Apply a small amount and scrub lightly with your hands. Rinse it with lukewarm water.
Baking soda removes the dead skin with lemon juice acting as a toner. Coconut oil and tea tree oil helps in restoring moisture and keeping the skin healthy.
4. Treat Skin Rashes and Itchiness
Skin rashes and itchiness is very problematic. Since baking soda has a soothing and inflammatory effect, it can help in the treatment of skin rashes and itchiness. It can help reduce inflammation, swelling, and itching.
Make sure that skin is not irritated or broken before using it and if it is broken or irritated then don’t use it.
5. Reduce Dandruff
Dandruff is the most common hair problem faced by people and is very difficult to get rid of. However, you can eliminate or reduce dandruff easily with proper hair care. Using baking soda with lemon juice once in a while can help reduce dandruff and remove buildup. Longtime regular usage of baking soda is not recommended as it can stress out your hair and make it brittle and dry.
I use baking soda once a week or two along with a good paraben and sulfate-free shampoo. Currently, I am using St. Botanica Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo and it’s a lot better than regular shampoos.
6. Breath Freshener
Having a fresh breath is paramount in oral hygiene. You can easily make mouthwash from baking soda and get rid of bad odor. Just mix tsp of baking soda in a glass of warm water. Your mouthwash is ready!

7. Whiten Your Teeth
Baking soda has mild abrasive properties which can help in whitening the teeth and removing plaque. All you need to do is gently brush with baking soda and toothpaste mixture.
With that said, it can be too abrasive if you use it daily and it’s better to use it say once a week or two to help polish your teeth. If you have braces then it’s not a good idea to use baking soda.
8. Relieve Heartburn
Heartburn, also known as acid reflux is a burning sensation that arises in the upper region of the stomach and can spread out to your mouth. Overeating, stress, and eating oily or spicy foods are a few common causes of heartburn.
You can easily treat heartburn using baking soda as it neutralizes acid in the stomach. Dissolve a tsp of baking soda in cold water and drink it slowly.
9. Canker Sores
The small painful ulcers that form inside your mouth are canker sores. Baking soda mouthwash can do wonders in soothing the pain caused by canker sores. It’s easy to make: mix 1 tsp of baking soda in a glass of warm water. Swish and rinse as usual.
10. Insect Bites and Stings
You just need to make a paste of baking soda with water and apply it as an ointment on the affected area. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes before washing it away. Easy and quick!
You can even use it to relieve mosquito bites.
11. Pacify Indigestion
Most people suffer from an upset stomach or indigestion now and then, and it can make carrying out even the simplest activities very hard. Baking soda is a quick fix for indigestion, add 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of water and drink it slowly to counteract the acid in your stomach.
However, it does not work when acid is not the problem behind indigestion.
12. Pamper Your Feet
Soothe and soften your feet after a tiring day by soaking your feet in a solution of baking soda and water. Fill a tub with water and mix 2-3 tablespoons baking soda in it and soak. It will relax you!
13. Homemade Deodorant
An easy way to combat body odor is to use deodorants. But most commercial deodorants are loaded with harsh chemicals which are not good for the skin. You can combat body odor without subjecting it to harsh chemicals by using a homemade deodorant. Here is how can you make homemade deodorant:
- Take 5-7 tablespoons of melted coconut oil in a small bowl.
- Add an equal amount of baking soda.
- Add 15-20 drops of essential oils.
- Stir the ingredients well.
- Put the paste in a glass jar or an empty deodorant container.
If you have sensitive skin, check the deodorant at a small patch of skin to make sure you are not allergic to baking soda.
14. Improve Kidney Function
Since baking soda is alkaline, consuming it can help improve kidney function by buffering the acid in your body, thereby keeping your pH levels balanced.
15. Keep Flowers Fresh for Longer
Adding 1 teaspoon of baking soda to the water in the flower vase will keep plucked flowers fresh for a long duration.
16. Keep Ants Away
Mixing equal parts of salt and baking soda and sprinkling it wherever you see ants will keep ants away. You will no longer need pest control.
