Worried about your hair? Don’t know what to do? Firstly, in order to take proper care of your hair, you need to know certain facts about your hair. Isn’t this correct?
Hair cells are one of the fastest growing cells in the body which means that they are among the top most to be affected by poor diet and unhealthy lifestyle. Dietary deficiency is an important factor resulting in the weakness of hairs. Other factors such as excessive heat and chemical exposure from products, styling as well as wear and tear and excessive washing results into weak, dry and dull hair in the long run.
Fret not, by changing certain lifestyle habits and following certain steps, you can definitely maintain stylish and shiny hair and at the same time keep them healthy. Below are some tips you can follow to get awesome hair:
#1. HEALTHY DIET
A healthy and proper diet is key for healthy hair. As your body needs nutrition, your hair too requires nutrition the same way. Try to add iron-rich foods in your diet like cereals, beans, chickpea, leafy vegetables, fish, etc.
Proteins promote the generation and repairing of cells. Greek yogurt is a rich source of protein and vitamin B5, an ingredient you can see on hair care product labels all the time.
There are high levels of vitamin A and C in dark green leafy vegetables especially, spinach boosts the production of sebum at the scalp level, which is essential for hair growth.
Fats from coconut, avocado, nuts, seed, and fish are healthy, especially for hair. These provide the strength and shine to your hairs which is an intricate quality of awesome hair.
#2. USE COCONUT OIL
I personally include this in my hair maintenance schedule. Twice a week I apply adequate amount(able to form a good coat over your hair) of coconut oil on my dried hair especially the scalp and massage it lightly for 3- 4 minutes so that the oil penetrates in every corner of the scalp.
It is advisable to apply this mask before sleeping in the night or sometimes even during early morning(3-4 hours before having a bath) and then wash it with shampoo (preferably). You can do this as per your choice but prefer nights or early morning so you don’t need to spend extra minutes to wash them off.
Also, you cant spend your entire day with that oil on as Its very sticky and may make you feel like just getting rid of it, so night is the best time. Don’t forget to protect your pillow from the oil stains by placing newspaper or any other material.
There are a lot of advantages to doing this. It gives texture to your hair and makes them very smooth and silky. Coconut oil provides the required nutrition to your hairs, promotes a healthy scalp and prevents whitening of hairs in the long run. It also promotes hair growth.
#3. CHOOSING SHAMPOO
I read an article about this on another blog and then I was way too curious to know about it so I referred to some other sources and got to know about it. So I thought I should include this point in this article. Many types of shampoo are available in the market. All of them have some or the other difference with respect to ingredients in them.
In past few years, there’s been a lot of talking about sulfates in shampoo. So what are sulfates? Well, they are the reason your shampoo lathers. They clean your scalp and hair, by removing the dirt from hair. But some researches indicate that they also strip your hair of essential oils so it is not quite good for people with dry hair. They are the reason why your eye stings when shampoo runs down off your face.
Also, It is as equally possible to get your hair cleaned with sulfate free shampoos. Nowadays, organic shampoos are a great choice as most of them are infused with natural oils, and organic ingredients. Also, they are paraben, alcohol, and sulfate free. Currently, I am using Wow apple cider vinegar shampoo from the past six months and it’s pretty good. I am in love with it. So this is a must try.
#4. AVOID OVERWASHING
Many people are under the impression that cleaning your hair daily with shampoo is essential and is beneficial. Absolutely WRONG. Such an action deprives the hair of nutrients and oils required by them as they get washed away. It dries up the hair.
Also, according to Sam Burnett, owner and creative director of Hare & Bone “shampoo should only be applied to the areas needed; scalp. The ends should not be scrubbed and should be left alone as this can distress the hair by the rubbing motion.
#5. PRECAUTIONS WHILE DEALING WITH WET HAIR
I am not very sure about this as I haven’t tried this since I have very short hair but still, you can have a look at it and also, don’t forget to refer to other resources. Wet hairs are extremely delicate, make sure you are very gentle and are using a wide tooth comb on them. Using a brush on wet hair can cause damage and may even rip off some of your hair.
Make sure your hair is completely dry, then you can use the brush by holding your hair midlength and brushing the ends of hair so that you don’t put too much force on them.
#6. AVOID HEAT
Excessive heat damages the hair. Heat from styling can strip the hair of its natural oils and can cause considerable damage like leaving it brittle apart from making it dull and dry. The heat from dryers used to dry the hairs also damages the hair.
Avoid regular styling of hair using heat and always use a heat protective spray to minimize damage.
#7. AVOID EXCESSIVE MASSAGE
I don’t think any of you want hair fall. So if you massage your hair frequently and strongly, then you should stop it. Excessive and strong massage weakens the hair roots thus leading to hair fall. Strong and frequent massages damage the hair as it alters their texture. So switching to light massages is a better option.
#8. APPLY CURD
Yes, you read it right. Applying slightly rotten curd is very beneficial for the hair. And the proof of this is the writer of this post himself. A few months ago, I read that massaging your hair with curd once or twice a week regularly and leaving it for around 10 minutes makes your hair smooth and silky and also provides nutrition to them.
Another big advantage is it helps you to get rid of dandruff. So I tried it and the results are positive. But I lacked in consistency and to keep your hair dandruff free you need to be consistent. Since it is completely natural, there are no side effects. Also, on applying, it gives a cooling sensation to your head, thus making you feel relaxed.
The only disadvantage is the curd odor from hair even after washing it off. So you may need to wash your hair afterward with shampoo. But that is completely optional.
#9. INDIAN GOOSEBERRY
Indian gooseberry is a boon for your hair. It is an extremely rich source of antioxidants, and also contains gallic acid, kaempferol, and flavonoids all of them help to enhance hair texture which is another important quality of awesome hair.
Massaging your hair with its oil promotes blood circulation which optimizes nourishment to follicles and promotes hair growth. Cleaning the scalp and preventing grey hair is an added advantage. So you should prefer hair oil and shampoo which has Indian gooseberry as a major ingredient.
